Matthew McGilvray
Matthew McGilvray joined Anderson & Anderson Law as an Associate Attorney in 2021. His primary areas of practice are immigration law and criminal defense. Matthew represents clients in criminal and juvenile cases in Minnesota District Court, in removal proceedings in Immigration Court, and in matters before the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service, the Board of Immigration Appeals, the U.S. District Court for the District of Minnesota, and the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals for the 8th Circuit. He graduated with a B.A. from the University of Minnesota in 2016, where he majored in Global Studies and in Spanish. Matthew was admitted to practice law in the state of Minnesota in 2020, after he graduated from Mitchell Hamline School of Law.
Matthew believes that his interest in immigration law began as a teenager growing up in southeast Wisconsin, where he worked on a local farm alongside families from the Hmong immigrant community. His goal of working in immigration law solidified in college when he studied abroad in Mexico and Venezuela. As an undergraduate student he also volunteered for three years with Open Door Learning Center, where he taught English as a Second Language to immigrant adults in northeast Minneapolis. While in law school, Matthew volunteered with several organizations and clinics that supported the Twin Cities immigrant community. In January of 2020, Matthew volunteered for one week in Dilley, Texas, where he worked with detained families who were recent arrivals to the U.S. Matthew’s background in criminal defense began in law school when he interned as a certified student attorney for the Ramsey County Public Defender. His criminal defense work specializes in advising clients of specific immigration considerations/consequences of their pending charges and convictions.
Matthew is dedicated to providing his clients with individualized and empathetic representation. He enjoys helping his clients navigate complicated judicial systems and intersections of state and federal law. He is fluent in English and Spanish.
